Carton Edge Raises the Bar for Carton Finishers

On Tuesday 8th May 2007, Michael Johnson, Chief Executive of the BPIF, opened Carton Edge’s impressive new factory which has raised the bar in the carton finishing sector.

In front of an invited audience of Carton Edge customers, Mr Johnson formally opened the new plant, two miles from the company’s previous site in Coventry. Mr Johnson said, “What Carton Edge have done here is very exciting. They have created a facility that many carton makers themselves would be proud of, let alone carton finishers.”

The new Carton Edge plant is a state of the art facility which has already received a glowing report from BRC/IOP inspectors.

Eddie Owen, Chairman of Carton Edge, said, “Our vision is that converters will see us not as subcontractors but as a manufacturing partner they are proud to acknowledge. To achieve this we felt we needed to meet, or even exceed, the standards of hygiene and quality they apply in their own plants. Traditionally, finishing is outsourced by carton makers as a last resort. We want them to see us as a first choice instead.”

With 14,000 square feet of space, plus room for expansion, the Carton Edge plant houses three new tray forming lines, in addition to the gluing, window patching, pick & place, edging and over-labelling lines the company is known for. Carton Edge sees tray production as a growing market which it can serve.

Neal Whipp, Managing Director, said, “We are very conscious that in the convenience food market there has been a move away from plastic trays towards carton board. To that end we have installed two new Heiber & Schroeder tray forming machines and a Swedish tray welding unit. The Heiber & Schroeder machines combine conventional gluing with advanced productivity, while the tray weld unit allows us to produce packs for products such as chilled pasta and ovenable bakery items.”

Help with the layout of the plant was provided by specialists from the BPIF, while relocation assistance was provided by Advantage West Midlands, the Regional Development Agency for the area.

Carton Edge has also implemented a substantial lean manufacturing programme at the new plant with advice and assistance from Vision in Print.
